Also called Cape Gooseberry or Goldenberry. It is a small native plant from South America, and has been grown for a thousands of years by the tribes who inhabited the Andes before the conquest of America.
The plantations had been technified and brougth to great scale in Colombia, offering the international markets an exotic fruit of high reputation.
The Physalis is round, yellow-orange fruit, covered by husk that protects the fruit against insects, birds, pathogens and extreme climatic conditions. It is characterized for being a sweet fruit with high contents of vitamins A and C, iron and phosphorus.
In some regions of Colombia, Physalis know for its medicinal properties, and it is especially looked for by people with high sugar levels.
The fruit is consumed by itself, in salads, ice cream, cakes and for jam. The Physalis is sold generally as it comes from the plant, within its husk.
